This trip to Chicago came with a small experiment. I wanted to see what would happen if I had essentially unlimited film.<\/p>\n

The conclusion is simple. Aside from the obvious increase in cost, the overall quality of the photos declines. That sense of \"one in a thousand\" disappears. When the shutter is pressed without careful consideration, each frame simply becomes less valuable.<\/p>\n

Is it possible to just take more photos and pick the best one later? I do not think so. At least, that approach does not work for me. The photos I truly like come from observation, from what I see and decide in the moment, not from increasing the number of attempts and hoping one turns out well.<\/p>\n

Over the past two to three months, I have also been revisiting digital cameras. What I noticed is that when there is no cost associated with pressing the shutter, it becomes much easier to take it for granted. It is just human nature.<\/p>\n

I have always felt that shooting film is similar to attending a live music performance. The musicians on stage will not play the same piece again just for you. Because of that, your senses become sharper. You listen more carefully, you pay closer attention, and you become more immersed in the moment. Streaming music, on the other hand, does not carry that same sense of irreversibility.<\/p>\n

Film photography feels the same way.<\/p>\n

I have never considered film to be a filter. For me, film is simply a way of choosing how to experience the world. That experience itself is what matters most. Liking the process, liking the feeling of taking photos, that is what really matters.<\/p>\n

This roll mainly documents our first visit to a local supermarket in Chicago, \"Mariano's.\"<\/p>\n

No matter which country I travel to, I always feel that visiting a local supermarket is important. It gives you a direct sense of how people live, what things cost, and what everyday life looks like. These are things that are difficult to understand from typical \"must-buy\" travel lists online.<\/p>\n

\nIn Chicago, SUVs are extremely common. The most frequently seen model is probably the Jeep Wrangler, and there are also many Ford Bronco. Both look great in person.<\/p>\n

\nThere are a lot of accessible parking spaces here, and most of them are empty. The penalties for illegal parking are extremely high, somewhere around 10,000 to 20,000 NTD equivalent.<\/p>\n

\nIndoor scenes are generally a weak point for the Minolta AF-C 35mm f2.8, because the shutter speed drops. With something like the Lomo LC-A 35mm f2.8, you could at least switch to flash sync mode and force the shutter speed to 1\/60.<\/p>\n

This was taken at the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago. Many of the buildings here are remarkable. The aquarium opened in 1930, which is surprisingly early when you think about it.<\/p>\n

\nThe dolphin presentation is described as an introduction rather than a performance. The focus is on education, even though there are still dynamic moments with the dolphins.<\/p>\n

Behind the pool, there is a large glass wall facing Lake Michigan. During the presentation, a screen is lowered to block the light and create a projection surface. It is a very thoughtful design.<\/p>\n

\nEven while in the US, I still had to stay connected with work in Taiwan. You can tell from the sky outside and the time on the clock.<\/p>\n

\nIt seems people here rarely hang laundry to dry. Everything goes straight into the dryer. Thinking about it, I do not recall seeing laundry hanging in Hollywood films either.<\/p>\n

\nWe were having brunch when we noticed a Tesla Cybertruck parked behind us. Seeing one in person is quite impressive.<\/p>\n

\nThis grid-style lighting setup is quite interesting. It reduces energy use while still maintaining a sense of spaciousness.<\/p>\n

\nIn Taiwan, wet floor signs are usually A-shaped. Here I saw a triangular, tent-like design, which is visible from all directions.<\/p>\n

\nIf you look closely, the signs on the right all say \"Pizza.\" That entire section is dedicated to pizza.<\/p>\n

\nThe checkout process here is interesting. One person handles payment, while another helps bag the items. Each bag has a small fee, and since they are relatively small, we ended up carrying many bags home.<\/p>\n

\nJeep is considered a domestic brand here. Having strong domestic car brands probably contributes to everyday convenience.<\/p>\n
